2. What's your sweat level?

Sweat level What to look for
💧 Low – dry or cool hands A light tacky grip works well. Look for lotions or light spray formulas.
💧💧 Moderate – some sweat during training A liquid chalk or powder-based grip helps absorb moisture without clogging pores.
💧💧💧 High – very sweaty hands or body Dry Hands or similar drying formulas are designed for high-sweat situations. Apply thinly and allow to dry before going on the pole.

3. Where do you apply it?

  • On your skin – most grip aids are skin-safe; always check the product description and do a small patch test if you have sensitive skin.
  • On the pole – not recommended for most grip products. Applying grip aid directly to the pole can damage the finish and affect other users. Always apply to your body, never the pole, unless the product explicitly states otherwise.

4. How much residue is acceptable?

Your preference What to choose
No residue – clean pole after every session Powder or dry-formula grips that brush off easily
Minimal residue – quick wipe-down is fine Light liquid or lotion grips
Residue doesn't matter – home pole only Stickier gel or tack-based formulas for maximum grip

5. Does your studio have rules about grip aids?

Many studios restrict which grip aids are permitted — especially sticky or oil-based formulas that leave residue and affect shared equipment. Always check your studio's policy before purchasing. If in doubt, powder-based or dry-formula grips are typically the most studio-friendly choice.

6. Are you a beginner or working on performance moves?

  • Beginners – Start with a gentle, easy-to-apply formula. You want enough tack to build confidence without over-relying on grip so you can develop skin conditioning over time.
  • Intermediate / Advanced – You likely have a better sense of your sweat level and application needs. Experiment with different formulas to find your performance-day favourite.
  • Competition or showcase – Prioritise a consistent, residue-light formula you've already tested in training.
